Marissa is a survivor of domestic violence from Jacksonville, FL who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defending herself from violence. Even though she merely fired a gun in the air and injured no one, she was denied the defense of Florida’s “Stand your Ground” law and sentenced under a mandatory minimum. In September 2013, Marissa’s conviction was overturned by an appeals court and a new trial ordered, but she remains in jail awaiting her new trial, scheduled for 2014.
